The finished result, which is loosely based on the decadent life of the Roman emperor Caligula, is a one hour and forty minute exercise in sadistic tedium. It's not stylish or intelligent enough to be an artsy cinematic exercise in bad taste. On the other hand, it's not trashy enough to be enjoyable as unintentional camp. Writer-director Enzo G. Castellari is best known to genre fans through his work on "Guns N' Roses" , "The Beyond" and other Italian horror flicks, but he also directed two cult horror classics, "Brainstorm" and "Werewolves on Wheels". The former was a campy concoction about space alien zombies, but the latter - which starred Ozzy Osbourne as the son of the devil - was better classified as gothic horror. Castellari's latest film, "Caligula", was an attempt to defile the memory of the late Roman emperor. The result was a movie that falls somewhere between Italian grindhouse trash and Black Sabbath. In other words, it serves as a perfect introduction to Enzo Castellari as a director capable of making anything from space zombies to Satan's spawn. In those pre-"Born Again" years, Ozzy Osbourne was known as the prince of gloom and doom - and his performance in "Caligula" is right on par with his previous roles in horror and exploitation flicks like "Werewolves on Wheels" and "Brainstorm". If you're looking for the original uncut version of the film, it's not available on DVD or Blu-Ray. The best source I've found is this best-of collection put out by GfK Entertainment in late 2007. The DVD edition is about 10 minutes shorter than the Blu-ray release, but still contains plenty of extreme violence that can't be shown without an R rating. Rotten Tomatoes reports that only 27% of critics have given "Caligula" a positive review...with most of them being negative in tone! A few notable exceptions include Roger Ebert who gave it 2 1/2 stars out of 4, calling it "an intelligent gothic horror film", and A. D. Murphy of Variety, who described the film as "a lurid, ludicrous and entirely engaging pastiche of Italian horror and American trash cinema." "Caligula" is a complete and utter failure as a film - but it's one that doesn't deserve to be completely forgotten. It's an ambitious attempt to tell the story of one of history's most notorious rulers - and while it fails on almost every level, there are still some moments that are worthy of some attention. Better yet, if you're interested in watching "Caligula", then I highly recommend that you read up on Roman history while watching the movie. Wikipedia is a great resource for this type of thing. cfa1e77820
